If you own a battery in Perth, several Virtual Power Plant (VPP) programs will pay you for access to it. The offers differ enormously. Here's the 2026 landscape.
What a VPP actually does
A VPP remotely draws on your battery during grid stress events (hot February evenings, mostly) and pays you for the privilege — through upfront credits, per-event payments or better tariffs.
The main Perth options
Synergy Battery Rewards
The default choice for Synergy customers: upfront enrolment credit plus event payments. Conservative battery cycling, full manufacturer-warranty compliance, and required for some WA battery scheme benefits.
Plico Energy
A subscription model — you pay weekly for a solar+battery system Plico installs and maintains, and they operate it as part of their fleet. Lower upfront cost, but you don't own the asset for years.
Amber for Batteries
Wholesale price exposure: Amber automates your battery to charge cheap and discharge into price spikes. Highest earning ceiling, highest variability.
Our take
For most owners we install for, Synergy Battery Rewards is the sensible default — meaningful payments without aggressive cycling. Spreadsheet enthusiasts can out-earn it with Amber. We configure VPP enrolment as part of every battery installation.
